Preparing for childbirth: packing your hospital bag

As your due date approaches, it's time to pack your hospital bag. This time, you won't just be packing for yourself, but for your baby as well (how exciting!). We recommend having your bag ready from week 37 onwards to avoid having to pack under pressure. But don't worry, here's a complete list of what we suggest you pack in your bag.

For Baby
Newborns don't need much more than mom and her milk, but there are some essential items we recommend you bring. It's always a good idea to wash your baby's clothes before the first use, but we also recommend sitting or lying with your baby's clothes and blanket before delivery, so that they get a smell of mommy that your baby will love.

  • 2 rompers
  • 2 bodysuits
  • 2 leggings
  • 2 muslins
  • 2 pairs of socks
  • Blanket
  • hat
  • Wet wipes
  • A pack of newborn diapers
  • Baby car seat for safe return home

For mom
The list of things for you is a little longer, because here you will be thinking about some items to make the birth more relaxing, as well as products for your personal care after delivery, comfortable clothes and some necessary documents.

For childbirth

  • Lavender oil - lavender helps you relax
  • Pillow - hospital pillows are almost always uncomfortable.
  • Heating pad to relieve contractions
  • Relaxing playlist for childbirth
  • Rebozo - practice before delivery with your partner to help ease contractions
  • Snacks of your choice

Personal care

  • Deodorant
  • Body cream
  • Shampoo
  • Lanolin cream for your nipples - you can apply it before delivery to prepare your skin for breastfeeding.
  • Hair tie
  • Nursing pads
  • Soft toilet paper - sometimes hospital paper is very hard and can hurt you after delivery.
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Hairbrush
  • Overnight sanitary pads - it is normal to have a lot of bleeding after giving birth.

Outfit

  • 2-3 changes of comfortable clothes
  • Robe - is very useful for skin to skin contact with your baby.
  • Nursing bra
  • Flip flops/slippers
  • Pajamas
  • Comfortable underwear - we recommend 100% cotton.

Documents and others

  • Cell phone and charger - you'll want to document your baby's first hours of life.
  • Hospital contract
  • Official identification
  • Birth plan - this is where you will write down your wishes and needs for your birth, be sure to share this with your doctor before delivery.
When packing, plan on spending 1-3 days in the hospital. If you have a vaginal birth, you will most likely stay a maximum of 2 days in the hospital. If you have a c-section, it is usually 2-3 days maximum.
